Concussions and other mild traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are among the most common head injuries, affecting athletes, accident survivors, and everyday people alike. While most people recover with rest, some continue to experience lingering symptoms for weeks or months. As interest in recovery options grows, many people are asking whether hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) might play a role. In this post, we look at what HBOT is, what the current research suggests, and what to keep in mind if you are considering it.

How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Works

During an HBOT session, you breathe oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. The increased pressure allows your blood to carry more oxygen than it could at normal atmospheric pressure, delivering it more readily to tissues throughout the body. Researchers studying brain injury are interested in this because oxygen plays a central role in how tissues repair themselves, and an injured brain may have areas where blood flow and oxygen delivery are reduced.

What the Research Says So Far

Research into HBOT for concussion and persistent post-concussion symptoms is active and evolving. Some studies, including work focused on people with lingering symptoms after a mild TBI, have reported improvements in areas such as cognition, mood, sleep, and quality of life. Other studies have shown more modest or mixed results, and scientists continue to debate how much of the benefit comes from the oxygen and pressure themselves. It is fair to say the early findings are encouraging enough to warrant continued study, while also acknowledging that the evidence is not yet settled.

An Important Note

HBOT is not currently an FDA-approved treatment for concussion or traumatic brain injury, and it is not a substitute for the care of a qualified medical provider. A concussion is a serious injury that should always be evaluated by a healthcare professional, and any recovery plan should be guided by your own doctor. If you are exploring HBOT as part of your wellness routine, we encourage you to discuss it with your provider so you can make an informed decision based on your individual situation.
